Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition characterized by extreme mood swings, including emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). These mood swings can affect energy levels, activity, sleep, behavior, and the ability to think clearly. Bipolar disorder is a lifelong condition that can significantly impact daily functioning and relationships if not properly managed.
Periods of abnormally elevated mood, increased energy or activity, inflated self-esteem, decreased need for sleep, more talkative than usual, racing thoughts, distractibility, increased goal-directed activities, and involvement in risky behaviors (e.g., excessive spending, sexual indiscretions).
Similar to manic episodes but less severe and not causing significant impairment in social or occupational functioning.
Persistent sadness or empty mood, loss of interest in activities once enjoyed, significant weight loss or gain, insomnia or excessive sleeping, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt, difficulty concentrating, and recurrent thoughts of death or suicide.
Symptoms of both mania and depression occurring simultaneously, leading to severe mood instability.
Mood stabilizers such as lithium and anticonvulsants (e.g., valproate, lamotrigine) are commonly prescribed to control mood swings. Atypical antipsychotics (e.g., quetiapine, olanzapine) and antidepressants may also be used in combination with mood stabilizers.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps patients understand and manage their condition by identifying negative thought patterns and behaviors. Psychoeducation provides information about bipolar disorder, treatment options, and strategies for managing symptoms. Family therapy focuses on improving communication and problem-solving skills within the family.
Establishing a regular routine for sleep, meals, and activities can help stabilize mood. Regular physical activity, a healthy diet, and avoiding alcohol and recreational drugs are also beneficial.
